CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) in Colchester, Essex
Convenient for Chelmsford, Braintree and South Suffolk

"Helping you to become the best version of you"

I offer CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) in a specially-converted room within my home in Colchester, Essex.

CBT focuses on how we think about or view a situation. Our thoughts then affect how we act in that situation which in turn affects how we feel about it.

CBT Model

For instance, if we think that someone we know has ignored us in the street, we will not approach them to say hello. This may then make us feel upset with, or disappointed in, that person which may lead to us avoiding them in the future. In CBT, the therapist and client work collaboratively to identify the client's unhelpful thoughts and behaviour and work towards moderating or changing them, which in turn will improve how they feel.

CBT is evidenced based talking therapy that can help an individual manage their problems by challenging and modifying the way they think and behave.

Whilst it used most commonly to treat anxiety and depression, it can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is Effective with the Following:

  • Depression/low mood
  • Anxiety
  • Health anxiety
  • Body image problems
  • Panic Attacks
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Worry/ Generalised Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Habit Disorders
  • Low self-esteem/confidence
  • Social anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Chronic conditions/pain

What You Can Expect

Unlike some other talking treatments such as counselling, CBT deals with an individual's current problems, rather than focusing on issues from their past. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is based on the idea that an individual's thoughts, feelings, physiology and behaviour are interconnected and that unhelpful thoughts and feelings can trap the individual in a vicious cycle. It then looks for practical solutions to modify those behaviours and thoughts in order to improve the individual's state of mind on a daily basis.

CBT is delivered over 6-12 sessions but can be expanded to 20 sessions if appropriate.

Sessions 1-2 are assessment sessions which enable the therapist and client to gain a clearer understanding of the client's problem. Together the therapist and client will establish some problems and goals of therapy that will be worked through in the treatment sessions. Depending on the problems identified, the client will be encouraged and supported to engage in a series of treatment interventions which are designed to challenge the client's unhelpful perceptions and behaviours in order to make the necessary changes to improve mood.

The last two sessions are focused on reviewing and evaluating the therapy and establishing a relapse prevention plan to ensure that the client remains well.
